What is neuroqueer identity?

Let’s start with the word itself. Neuro is shorthand for neurodivergent, a term that covers many conditions that change how an individual learns, thinks, and interacts with the rest of the world. Queer covers the entire LGBTQ+ community in all of its many shades and stripes. Neuroqueer identity describes LGBTQ+ people who also experience neurodivergence.

When I began offering therapy, I realized that many of my transgender, lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients also experienced ASD, ADHD, and other neurodiversities. If this describes you, then know that you aren’t alone - not by a very long sight. There is a word for your community.

But many of my neuroqueer clients feel isolated. We share a world where both queerness and neurodivergence are unfairly singled out for poor treatment. My clients often come to me bearing scars from people who dismiss them, reject them, berate them, or otherwise cause them unnecessary pain.

I recommend Neuroqueer Heresies: Notes on the Neurodiversity Paradigm, Autistic Empowerment, and Postnormal Possibilities by Nick Walker, especially for my clients with ASD. If you find yourself feeling alone in your identity, this is a wonderful place to find yourself. Because no matter how it feels, you are not alone. We’re here with you.
